A new report has revealed that 19 counties spent less than 20 percent of the money allocated for development in the first nine months of the financial year 2021/22.

According to the Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang’o, Taita Taveta, Machakos, Baringo, Nairobi, Lamu, Narok, Wajir, Nyandarua, Kisumu, Kiambu, Turkana, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Siaya, Garissa, Kilifi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, and Migori did not meet their target expenditure.

The Public Finance Management Act, 2012, requires county governments to spend a minimum of 30 percent of their budgets on development.

Only Kitui, Mombasa, and Marsabit counties attained an absorption rate above 50 percent.
