Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, Impeached

In a historic political development, Kenya’s Senate voted to impeach the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, removing him from office.

The decision came after the National Assembly had overwhelmingly approved a similar motion. This marks a significant moment in Kenya’s political history as Gachagua became the first deputy president to be impeached since the country’s 2010 constitutional reforms.

Kenyan senators voted Gachagua out of office on Thursday, October 17th while he was hospitalized at the Karen hospital. Gachagua, who had pleaded not guilty to 11 charges the day before, was unable to attend the trial, according to his legal team. The charges ranged included corruption, divisive politics and undermining the government. Kenyans are keen to see how Gachagua’s removal will affect the political landscape and governance in Kenya going forward.
