Nile River Agreement Established

The Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) was officially implemented on Sunday, marking a significant milestone despite strong opposition from Egypt and Sudan.

The agreement creates the Nile River Basin Commission (NRBC), a new governing body to promote cooperation and address water management issues among the Nile Basin countries. This agreement comes after decades of negotiations aimed at ensuring the sustainable and equitable use of the Nile’s resources. It also seeks to benefit all riparian countries and provides a legal framework to regulate the shared water of the Nile.

Egypt and Sudan remain opposed, citing concerns over water allocation and historical usage rights. The agreement, however, signals progress for broader water cooperation in the region.
