Protests erupted in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, as riot police fired tear gas at demonstrators on Monday. The protests come in the wake of a disputed election, with tensions high following the killings of two opposition figures on Saturday.

It is alleged that there was electoral fraud in the national election held on October 9, with opposition candidates claiming the poll was rigged. Early results indicated that the ruling party, Frelimo, was leading, but opposition groups and their supporters were already protesting the election process.

The Frelimo party which has been in power since 1975, faces accusations of manipulating the election by opposition leaders, civil society, and election observers, which the party has denied. Both the African Union and the United Nations have condemned the recent violence and urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
