Ghana’s parliament has been suspended indefinitely after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, sparking a legal dispute. The suspension comes just two months before the country’s general elections and affects important legislative activities, including budget approvals and key bills.
The conflict erupted between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) when four MPs defected, making the opposition party the majority.
Speaker Bagbin’s decision to declare the seats vacant, citing constitutional restrictions against defection, has been challenged in court. It creates uncertainty as the nation prepares for the December 7 elections.
