KRA to Introduce WhatsApp Tax Invoicing

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to launch a WhatsApp bot that will allow taxpayers to generate electronic tax invoices through WhatsApp. The move is part of KRA’s efforts to enhance voluntary tax compliance, particularly among small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This new initiative will simplify tax invoicing using the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (e-TIMS) and complement other platforms with the goal of integrating tax solutions into the daily operations of businesses. It is expected to be launched by July 2025, according to Hakamba Wangwe, KRA’s Chief Manager for eTIMS.

The WhatsApp invoicing system is currently in the testing phase and aims to curb tax evasion, especially in the informal economy. KRA hopes to increase collections to over KES 3 trillion for the financial year 2024/25, up from KES 2.4 trillion in the previous year.
