Kenya’s education system is facing a significant shortage of science teachers. The imbalance in teacher distribution is causing concern within the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), which fears this could disrupt science education across the country.
TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia, while addressing the National Assembly Education Committee, emphasized the severity of the issue. She pointed out that despite ongoing recruitment efforts, financial constraints and an oversupply of arts-trained educators have made it difficult to fill science teaching positions, particularly in subjects like physics.
Macharia further revealed that the 46,000 intern teachers recently hired are largely trained in arts, leaving science subjects severely underserved. She highlighted that the TSC has repeatedly informed the Ministry of Education about the shortage, urging for a more balanced training approach to ensure science education is not compromised.
