Mozambique’s ruling party wins election

Mozambique’s ruling party, Frelimo, has claimed victory in a contested election, extending its nearly five-decade hold on power. Daniel Chapo, the party’s presidential candidate, is seen as a symbol of change within Frelimo and is set to succeed outgoing President Filipe Nyusi after his two terms in office.

At 47, Chapo received 71% of the vote, making him Mozambique’s first leader born after independence in 1975. His main opponent, Venancio Mondlane, got 20% of the vote. In his victory speech, Chapo highlighted the discipline and organization of his party, stating, “We remained silent all this time, for respecting the law. We are an organized party that prepares its victories.”

The announcement of Frelimo’s win has sparked violent protests across various towns, resulting in multiple casualties and a heavy police presence in affected areas. Allegations of electoral rigging have caused unrest.
