President Ruto breaks silence over Adani deals

President William Ruto defended the power transmission projects awarded to India’s Adani Group yesterday. He noted that the private-sector investment could help ease the tax burden and reduce reliance on loans.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Orpower 22 Power Plant in Nakuru, Ruto applauded the Adani Group for investing Sh95.7 billion into the power project. The agreement with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Ketraco) grants Adani Energy Solutions Limited the rights to operate and maintain crucial transmission lines and substations for 30 years, aimed at addressing the country’s ongoing power outages.

Ruto likened this partnership to the Nairobi Expressway project. He explained that if the government had borrowed to fund the project, it would strained taxpayers.
