Parts of southern and eastern Spain have been struck by intense flash floods leading to loss of life and significant destruction. Some areas received up to 12 inches of rainfall within hours on Tuesday. Streets were submerged and cars swept away.
Valencia’s regional leader, Carlos Mazon, confirmed early Wednesday that several bodies were recovered as rescue teams gained access to previously isolated areas. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged that an unspecified number of individuals remain missing and urged the public to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel as emergency operations continue.
In response, the Spanish government activated a crisis committee to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
