Kenya’s exports to African countries have grown by 26% in the first seven months of 2024, driven by increased shipments and strengthened bilateral relationships. Kenya saw export revenue rise to approximately 248.7 billion shillings (1.93 billion USD) compared to 1.53 billion USD in the same period last year, as reported by the Central Bank.
Major destinations for Kenyan exports included Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and South Africa. They had a strong demand for products like tea, coffee, vegetable oils, reexported oil and manufactured goods. Kenya’s top export to Uganda was valued at 599.2 million USD, with significant figures also noted for Tanzania, Rwanda and DR Congo.
Kenya’s government has actively strengthened ties with various African nations, such as Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt, pushing for the removal of trade barriers under the African Continental Free Trade Area. In January 2024, Kenya also introduced a visa-free policy for African travellers, further encouraging regional trade and bolstering export growth across the continent.
